Living in an unfamiliar place comes with its share of culinary challenges . The simple act of shopping for and preparing a meal can bring on unforeseen complications due to lack of product availability and distribution, or even not knowing every corner of the local grocery store.
On the flip side, however, a new location opens doors to world of items not available at home (you can see some of my favorites here and here). One of my favorite new products is Charlie's Natural Soda.
Having worked in the natural food/beverage industry for years, I'm always looking out for brands I'm not familiar with. One warm afternoon, I had cocktails on my mind (big surprise) and went shopping. While scanning the isles of Albert Heijn for a mixer, Charlie's Black Currant, Acai & Mint jumped out at me - crazy flavor combination, bold packaging, all natural, I was intrigued. This would pair nicely with the fresh mint growing at home.
I grabbed a few cans, a bottle of light rum and some blue berries and rushed back to create this sweet, fruity and minty fresh concoction.
I should add, Charlie's tastes phenomenal on its own (we went back and bought as much as we could carry they following day) but also makes an excellent mixer.
Ingredients (for one):
2 oz light rum
1/4 cup blue berries
1/4 cup mint leaves, loosely packed
1 tsp sugar
4 oz Charlie's Black Currant, Acai & Mint soda
Muddle sugar and mint. Add berries and gently muddle. Add rum, soda and ice. Stir gently and enjoy.
