Icy. Boozy. Sweet. Granita makes a perfect treat on smoldering afternoons and an impressive dessert at dinner parties. Use it to cool down a pitcher of sangria (made with the same wine) or serve with vanilla ice cream. The possibilities are limited to your culinary imagination. Best of all, it's super easy to make.
1 bottle of red wine (I used a pinot noir)
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup tropical blend fruit juice (I used pineapple, passion fruit, mango, orange to go with the sangria I made)
Juice of 3 tangerines
Pour win into a large baking dish. In a sauce pan, over medium heat, dissolve the sugar into the juice. Add mixture to the wine and stir. Place in the freezer. After about 45 minutes, check on the granita. Ice-crystals should be forming. Use a fork and scrape the icy parts to the center. Repeat every 30 minutes or so, until the entire mixture is icy! The should take 4-6 hours.
