Do you love nachos? Do you love french fries? Do you love middle eastern food? You will love kapsalon.
I encountered this Dutch delicacy for the first time last year, when I visited JP in the Netherlands. I had no idea what I was ordering other than something new and tasty that involved shawarma. I was equally excited and disturbed to find the usual middle eastern salad fixings (lettuce, tomato, cucumber), garlic/chili sauce and a healthy portion of shawarma on a bed of french fries covered in melted gouda cheese.
Since the dish was created 12 years ago in Rotterdam, it's become quite popular around the Netherlands and Belgium. You'll find it in most middle eastern restaurants with your choice of shawarma, falafel or kebab.
Each combination is decadent to say the least, with a serving measuring around 1800 calories. If you're a fan of culinary monstrosities like Irish nachos and carne asada fries - I highly recommend kapsalon.
The kapsalon pictured is from Broodjeszaak Cairo in Dordrecht Centrum (we took an order home). The quality of ingredients and super friendly service will definitely bring us back (this is not sponsored).
Have you encountered any unique dishes abroad that you know people flip over at home? I'd love to hear about it!
