Yesterday afternoon, JP and I took a quick walk in the rain to Albert Heijn in Dordrecht Centrum. Usually on the weekends, the down town area is busy with people shopping, biking, walking and dining out. Throw some bad weather into the equation and everything goes quiet.
On our way back, we must have been conversing quite loudly because out of no where, the words "Is that English?!" wrapped in a slight southern drawl hit me like a ton of bricks.
Hearing an American accent in Dordrecht felt similar to hearing an old favorite song - surprising, comforting and brought on the warm and fuzzies.
I smiled, turned around and introduced myself to a friendly looking blonde woman on a bike - Paige. She's from Arkansas, married to a Dutch man and living in Dordrecht.
The three of us chatted in the rain, for a bit, exchanged information and went our separate ways. I'm surprised by how much this little interaction brightened my day.
Has anyone as an expat or traveler experienced one of these fun coincidences? Or has connecting with other expats helped your transition in an unexpected way? I'd love to hear about it.
