For being such a tiny country, the Netherlands is packed with beauty and diversity. Each city I've had the opportunity to visit has its own unique feel and draw. While I'm thrilled to call Dordrecht my home, I really enjoy venturing out and I'm fortunate to have a few friends residing in other cities to show me around.
Last week, I hopped on a train to the Hague (sounds like "egg" with and H if you're speaking English, or Den Haag if you want to sound Dutch) to meet Angelique, a long time resident. Our plan was to hit the beach if the weather was nice and it was our lucky day. Last time I went to Scheveningen with another friend, Danielle, it was hailing (the company was excellent but site seeing was out of the question).
We took a tram from the Hague Centraal to the 4-kilometer long coast and the fun began. I was completely shocked and impressed to find beach club after beach club along the boulevard, each more elaborate than the next. Growing up in Southern California, I'm no stranger to the extravagant beach clubs of Newport beach, Santa Monica, San Diego and Santa Cruz - but the volume and diversity in Scheveningen was like nothing I've experienced.
I was mesmerized - strolling around Scheveningen was like stepping into another world. The bright colors in a very grey country threw me off and the flamboyance of North beach felt so un-Dutch.
We spent about 2 hours walking around and taking pictures but it was the bright and cozy Zanzibar Beach Club that sucked us in for hot chocolate in the morning and sauvignon blanc later in the afternoon. The service was friendly and the atmosphere was so Gezellig. It's still early early in beach season over here, so the boulevard was quite empty, but during the summer it's supposedly packed with tourists and locals. I'm looking forward to returning to Scheveningen when the weather warms up and maybe even breaking out my bathing suit.
I definitely recommend spending a few hours in Scheveningen if you have the opportunity. What's your favorite beach or beach club to visit?
Until next time, be well!
